Pickering

AREA: 231.59 km2
Population 2011: 88,721
Projected 2026: 209,400
Projected 2031: 231,700

The slower growth of the Pickering area between 2001 and 2011 was due mainly to the city’s restrictions on land use in the northern part of the city. Negotiations are progressing to allow development of this area and the population is estimated to near 200,000 by 2031. Pickering has tremendous communication, transportation and development infrastructure and a skilled labor force. These factors, combined with a supportive municipal government, prime employment lands, local capital improvements and its’ picturesque location at the western end of Durham (closest to Toronto) make it an ideal retail or manufacturing environment.
